Being disorganized doesn’t mean you’re unsuccessful: Busting myths about goals, habits, & willpower
“What are you doing for fun right now?” This from my friend Jennifer, looking for ideas for herself.
Ummmm. Ugggg. This question stops me dead. FUN? Welllllll….
I’m definitely NOT the person to go to for advice on fun.
You’re probably doing cool FUN stuff like playing games, having creative ZOOM parties, getting crafty & artsy, gardening, hiking, reading -
Me? Wellllll - 16 years ago we bought a large 112-year-old house & amassed a LOT of stuff from our families -
Nice antiques & general old shit. In the spirit of frugality, and because we had ROOM, we took it all!
We still have a lot of that old shit. 🙈
So, I’ve used my “pandemic” time to purge it - giving away watches, clothing, old computers, furniture…etc. etc. etc.
Every day I choose a new drawer, cabinet, closet, or area to review, assess, & purge.
Then I post in various local Facebook groups to see if I can give directly to someone who’d like to use it!
Is this the nerdiest version of “having fun” out there, or what? (It really does bring me great joy though!)
The house feels lighter & lighter…and so do I!
It’s this kind of behavior that makes people say, “Wow, you’re so organized. You’re so productive! I wish I were more like you.”
But - that’s like saying, “Congratulations on having blue eyes & curly hair! You did it!”
I was BORN this way. It’s how my brain operates!
[Psst - What I do need to work on? Having FUN. Letting GO.]
If you’ve got the FUN piece down & want to learn the inside secrets of being organized, then I have GOOD NEWS for you today!
It’s not an elusive skill only “Born Organized” people can enjoy!
In the spirit of Making Room for what you want in 2021, I asked professional organizer Barbara Trapp to bust 5 organizing & productivity myths.
You’ll love Barbara’s life-affirming ways to get organized - without a formula!
Barbara breaks down exactly how to stop beating yourself up so you can create options that work for YOU.
Whether you’re working on a book, growing a business, launching a podcast -
Or simply starting a garden…
Learn nuggets you can implement right away.
No, she’s not gonna Marie Kondo your life & leave you to figure that shit out.
She’s not gonna make you rainbow organize everything -
Or make you go to the Container Store & buy THOUSANDS of dollars’ worth of organizing materials.
My favorite thing Barbara said: “Being disorganized doesn’t mean you’re unsuccessful.”
She teaches you that some of the strategies you’ve heard or tried might not work for you.
AND THAT’S OK.
Create your own sense of lightness to usher in what’s next for us in 2021 -
And make SPACE to make your dream or goal a reality…
