Do We Have the Right to Change?
Nine years ago, I posted on Facebook, It’s a Monday & also the first of the month! What a perfect day make a change & start again!
A fairly positive sentiment, right? But at that time, I wasn’t particularly positive IRL.
I got comments like, “Who ARE you?” “Are you OK?” “What’s going on with you?”
They stung; I questioned whether I had the right to say something positive since I’d never been a positive person.
Do we have the right to change? To decide who we want to be next?
I mean: imagine you’ve stayed exactly the same since middle school. You’re just taller now, with better taste in footwear and wine.
Imagine you’ve not changed at all.
How awful is that?
Now go back to reality: how have you changed?
I ask because something happens to us as adults. We resist the idea that we’re
allowed to change. We think we’re done developing at 18, 25, 30…
And then all of a sudden life feels “meh”, even when nothing’s really wrong. It’s because we haven’t done the developing we need.
We have not allowed what’s inside to really come out.
During this season of ‘busy’, get present and ask yourself who you want to show up as.
Who do you want to be?
Just because you’ve always done it one way doesn’t mean you have to continue the pattern!
Check in with yourself. Give yourself the gift of presence! (Ha! See what I did there? ;)
You’re not done developing.
Imagine if you were? Imagine if who you are right now is who you’re going to be the rest of your life? How BORING. How RESTRICTIVE!
You get to show up as who you want, but you’ve gotta know what you want.
We ask our kids all the time: What do you want for Christmas? What do you want to be when you grow up? What do you want for dinner?
But we don't ask ourselves.
Keep developing. Keep growing. You’re allowed, even if people around you raise their eyebrows.
What do you want to be?
Want to not give a shit what others think?
I specialize in that! At least set up a time to chat about it, First Name!
